Tragic Night in Murang’a as Two Brothers Killed in Truck–Motorcycle Crash

A tragic accident occurred in Kihuro village, Gaturi, Kiharu Constituency, when two brothers died after their motorcycle collided with a truck late at night.

The crash happened at around 10:30 pm when a truck transporting sand from Kimathi towards Mathioya hit the motorcycle carrying the brothers from Mahua-ini area. The loud collision drew residents to the scene, where they found the two young men, both believed to be in their twenties, dead on the road.

The truck driver reportedly fled, angering villagers who accused him of reckless driving. Residents said the driver often transported sand late at night and had previously endangered other road users.

Mary Wanjiku, a local resident, expressed the community’s grief:
“We are devastated. We have seen him drive recklessly, and now we have lost two of our sons. Often, boda boda riders are blamed for accidents, yet many crashes are caused by careless motorists. Why don’t drivers respect riders—they are our fathers, brothers, and sons?”

Joseph Mutonya, secretary of the Nyumba Kumi committee, confirmed the brothers died on the spot. He highlighted the poor condition of the Gakonya–Kigetu-ini road, riddled with potholes, which forces both motorists and riders to navigate dangerously.

“It is heartbreaking for the family to lose two sons. One was a boda boda mechanic who helped many riders,” Mutonya said, urging the county government to regulate night transportation of construction materials and prioritize repairs on the pothole-filled road.

Joseph Warui, discipline master of the Kabuta Boda Boda Association, noted that complaints against the truck driver had been raised before:“They transport sand at night to avoid levies, and when residents report their dangerous driving, they respond with insults.”

Police from Kigetu-ini station arrived at the scene, towing the wrecked truck and motorcycle, while the victims’ bodies were taken to the Murang’a County morgue.

Residents of Kihuro in Gaturi, Murang’a, watch as a tow truck prepares to pull the wreckage of an accident from the scene on March 11, 2026.

According to NTSA, motorcycle accidents account for a large share of road deaths in Kenya, with 1,133 boda boda riders killed in 2023. By October 2025, around 1,085 motorcyclists had already died, underscoring the ongoing risks faced by riders and passengers.
