An eight-year-old child died after being bitten by a snake while playing with other children at his family’s compound in Marsabit County.
The incident occurred on Monday morning in Haro Village, Dirib Location, according to officials, and was reported to police by the child’s father. Police officers, alongside Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) personnel, visited the scene and documented it following the child’s death.

The snake was found alive and subsequently collected by KWS officers. The child’s body was buried immediately in line with the family’s customs, and KWS officials advised the family to file a compensation claim.
Snake bites continue to be reported in parts of rural Kenya, prompting ongoing awareness campaigns in affected areas to educate residents on how to respond in the event of a bite.
Separately, police in Nyamira County are investigating the death of a 14-year-old boy who had earlier reported being assaulted and later died while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Kisii.
The boy died on August 14 at around 2:15 pm while being treated at Mediforte Hospital in Kisii Town. Police said he had first reported an assault on July 29, and the case remained under investigation at the time of his death.

Preliminary findings indicate the minor initially sought treatment at Mediforte Hospital on July 29, complaining of back pain. He returned to the same hospital on August 11 following the reported assault and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, where he remained for three days before his death on August 14.
Police said no visible physical injuries were noted on the body during examination at the mortuary. The body was moved to Ram Hospital mortuary for preservation as investigators documented the scene and gathered available information. A postmortem examination is pending to determine the cause of death and establish whether it was linked to the earlier reported assault.
