The U.S. Embassy in Nairobi will be closed on Monday, September 1, 2025, in observance of Labor Day, a national holiday in the United States dedicated to celebrating the contributions of American workers.
In a public notice issued on Friday, the embassy stated that its Nairobi offices would not operate that day, in line with U.S. federal practices, where government institutions, including overseas embassies, close on national holidays.
Labor Day, held annually on the first Monday of September, is one of the oldest public holidays in the U.S., originating in the late 1800s to honor the economic and social achievements of American laborers.
As a result, individuals planning to access consular services — such as visa applications, passport services, or notarial assistance — are advised to make appropriate arrangements.
The embassy’s announcement was accompanied by a proclamation from U.S. President Donald Trump, highlighting the historic role of American workers in building the nation’s infrastructure and economy. He reiterated his administration’s commitment to revitalizing American industry, creating jobs, and promoting fair trade agreements that benefit U.S. workers.
“This Labor Day, we reaffirm our commitment to protecting American jobs and honoring the workforce that has shaped our nation’s past, present, and future,” Trump stated.
The embassy’s closure reflects a broader tradition among U.S. diplomatic missions around the world to observe national holidays observed back home.
