Enhanced security measures have been put in place along Thika Road and around the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, ahead of today’s African Nations Championship (CHAN) final.
Fully geared police officers were deployed early in the day to monitor key areas, including the busy Roysambu roundabout and access points to Kasarani. Motorists underwent security checks to ensure the safety of fans, dignitaries, and international guests heading to the venue.
President William Ruto is set to join FIFA President Gianni Infantino at Kasarani for the highly anticipated final between Madagascar and Morocco, with CAF President Patrice Motsepe also expected to attend.
The match, scheduled for a 6pm kick-off, will mark the conclusion of the month-long tournament, which began on August 2.
President Ruto’s attendance highlights the government’s commitment to sports and his personal passion for football. The President has been an active supporter of the national team throughout the CHAN tournament, attending Harambee Stars’ matches at Kasarani and cheering them on despite their early exit. His presence has been seen as a morale booster for players and fans, demonstrating his desire to restore Kenya’s standing in continental football.
Infantino arrived in Nairobi on Friday afternoon, marking his first official visit to Kenya since taking office in 2016. He was welcomed at JKIA by Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed, who described the visit as a significant milestone for Kenyan football.
“This is a historic moment for Kenya. The FIFA President’s visit is a reflection of the trust in our country’s ability to host major football events,” said Mohammed.
Infantino will serve as the chief guest at the final, alongside President Ruto, highlighting the global recognition of Kenya’s growing influence in football.
The final will see Madagascar, the tournament’s surprise debutants, face off against Morocco, the two-time CHAN champions aiming for a third title.

Infantino’s presence is seen as a boost to Kenya’s aspirations of hosting larger football events in the future, including the Africa Cup of Nations. The success of CHAN 2024 and the FIFA President’s visit are being viewed as key steps toward Kenya’s goal of hosting even bigger tournaments.
In addition, Kenya is set to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Uganda and Tanzania, a significant milestone that will test the country’s preparedness for major continental sports events.
