Kirinyaga: Locals Flock to ‘Fetch’ Fuel From Overturned Tanker

An incident occurred on Saturday evening along the Mwea-Embu highway in Kirinyaga, involving a diesel tanker that had overturned. According to reports, the tanker flipped over around 6pm after colliding with a saloon car. The occupants of the car were promptly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

In the aftermath of the accident, hundreds of residents disregarded safety concerns and hurried to extract the valuable liquid from the overturned tanker.

Peter Ngure, a resident of the area, described the scene: “People rushed to the scene with containers to siphon the fuel. They tapped the diesel in jerry cans which they carried back to their homes.”

Police officers from Wamumu and Sagana were dispatched to the location shortly afterward. However, they faced challenges in managing the crowd, many of whom were armed with jerry cans.

Subsequently, both the tanker and the saloon car were towed to Sagana police station later that Saturday night, once the authorities had successfully gained control of the situation.
