The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has traced a white Toyota Probox captured on CCTV near the scene of the fatal crash that claimed former Lugari MP and businessman Cyrus Jirongo, as inquiries into the incident progress.
In a Thursday update, the DCI said detectives visited Keringet in Kuresoi South, Nakuru County, to trace and interview individuals connected to the vehicle’s registration. CCTV footage showed the Probox at Eagol Petrol Station in Karai shortly after Jirongo stopped there, moments before the crash occurred.

Investigators revealed that the Probox is registered to a Member of County Assembly (MCA) and is managed by his wife. At the time of the incident, the vehicle had been hired and was being used for a family trip to Nairobi.

The occupants told investigators they had travelled from Nakuru to Nairobi to receive a relative arriving from abroad, and were returning home shortly after midnight. They said they briefly stopped at the petrol station due to poor visibility caused by bad weather, primarily to refill the vehicle’s wiper fluid.

During the stop, they saw Jirongo leave the station and drive off toward Nairobi. They later witnessed a bus dragging his vehicle following the collision.

The occupants did not exit their vehicle but used headlights to illuminate the scene when a security guard requested assistance, before leaving as traffic began to build up. They reached their destination at around 6 a.m. and later learned the crash victim was Jirongo.

The DCI is interrogating these statements to reconstruct the full sequence of events leading to the crash. The agency assured Jirongo’s family, friends, and the public that the investigation is ongoing, thorough, and impartial, with all leads—including CCTV footage, witness accounts, and forensic evidence—being pursued to establish accountability.
