DCI Reveals Details of Jirongo’s Last Moments Before Fatal Highway Crash

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched detailed investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of former Cabinet minister and ex-Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, who died after a road accident on the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.

In a statement released on Monday, the DCI confirmed that the crash occurred in the early hours of December 13, 2025, at Karai in Naivasha, involving Jirongo’s car and a Climax Company Ltd public service vehicle (PSV) bus.

Preliminary findings indicate that the accident happened at about 2:19am and involved Jirongo’s vehicle, registration number KCZ 305U, and a bus bearing registration number KCU 576A. The impact was described as a head-on collision, with Jirongo’s car being pushed approximately 25 metres from the point of impact, while the bus stopped about 50 metres away.

Following the crash, the DCI deployed a multi-agency team comprising homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory to examine the scene and secure key exhibits.

Investigators have also reviewed CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station near the accident scene, which captures Jirongo’s final movements minutes before the collision. The footage shows his vehicle entering the station at 2:18:40am without refuelling, briefly stopping at the exit at 2:19:10am, and then making a right turn back towards Nairobi at 2:19:19am. Six seconds later, at 2:19:25am, the PSV bus collided with his car.

The driver of the bus, identified as Tyrus Kamau Githinji, has been questioned and released on cash bail as investigations continue into the offence of causing death by dangerous driving. He is expected to report back to the Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22, 2025.

Police have also recorded statements from the petrol station’s night guard and fuel attendant, who were on duty at the time and witnessed events surrounding the crash.

The DCI said investigations are ongoing, with forensic officers set to revisit the scene for further analysis. Detectives are also retracing Jirongo’s movements earlier that night, including questioning individuals he interacted with at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi.

Additional analysis of CCTV footage is underway, and statements will be taken from passengers who were on board the bus and other possible witnesses along the highway.

Once the probe is complete, a comprehensive file will be submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions for review and further action. The DCI also conveyed condolences to Jirongo’s family and assured the public that the investigation will be thorough, impartial and conducted in line with the law.
