President William Ruto has commissioned a Sh15 billion electricity transmission project connecting Sultan Hamud in Makueni County to Loitoktok in Kajiado County, in a move expected to improve power reliability in Kajiado South and support tourism activities around Amboseli National Park.
The project features a 108-kilometre Sultan Hamud–Loitoktok 132kV transmission line and a new 132/33kV Loitoktok Substation. The infrastructure is expected to increase electricity transmission capacity and address persistent power outages that have affected households and businesses across southern Kajiado.
Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira said the project will deliver a more dependable electricity supply while supporting businesses and other economic activities that rely on consistent power.
Wachira said he was pleased to host President Ruto during the official commissioning of the transmission line and Loitoktok Substation in Kajiado County.
The project comprises the 108km single-circuit transmission line linking Sultan Hamud and Loitoktok, an expansion of the existing 132/33kV Sultan Hamud Substation in Makueni, and construction of the new Loitoktok Substation.
According to Wachira, the investment has increased the region’s capacity to transmit electricity while improving access to reliable power for residents of Kajiado South.
The upgraded power supply is also expected to benefit hotels, lodges and other tourism-related businesses around Amboseli National Park, where stable electricity is essential for hospitality and tourism operations.
The project has additionally strengthened Kenya Power’s medium-voltage network in southern Kajiado, helping minimise frequent interruptions and improve the reliability of electricity supplied to homes and businesses.
The commissioning is part of government efforts to expand and modernise electricity infrastructure in areas with inadequate power supply. Reliable electricity is considered essential to promoting industrial growth, tourism, business activity and the delivery of key public services.
Wachira said the project would strengthen Kenya Power’s network and provide residents and businesses in southern Kajiado with a more stable and dependable electricity supply.
