Argentine President Javier Milei has formally communicated his decision to reject an invitation to join the BRICS grouping of major emerging economies by sending letters to BRICS leaders, as announced by the presidency on Friday.
The bloc, consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, had announced the admission of six new members, including Argentina, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the United Arab Emirates, with the membership set to commence from January 1, 2024.
The letters, signed by Milei and disseminated by various media outlets, explained that Argentina’s participation was deemed “inappropriate at this time.” Milei, an outsider with libertarian views, assumed office this month following a decisive victory over Argentina’s traditional political parties. During his campaign, he had pledged not to align with BRICS.
In the letters, Milei highlighted differences in foreign policy compared to the previous government, stating that some decisions made by the prior administration would be reviewed. Throughout his election campaign, Milei emphasized a geopolitical alignment with the United States and Israel, expressing a refusal to ally with communists.
Despite initial declarations to sever ties with major trading partners China and Brazil, Milei has adopted a more conciliatory stance since taking office.
