The 17-year-old was reportedly washing clothes when he accidentally came into contact with a live electrical wire. He was quickly taken to a nearby hospital but was declared dead on arrival following the weekend incident.

Authorities have raised concern over the growing number of electrocution cases across the country, many of which are linked to illegal electricity connections. Kenya Power has launched a campaign to tackle the issue, especially in rural areas and informal settlements where such incidents are most prevalent.

In a similar case, a student from Tsagasin Junior Secondary School in Kaloleni, Kilifi County, died after being electrocuted while fetching water from a tank near his home. Police suspect the water system had been connected to a live wire through an illegal hookup. The body was taken to the mortuary as investigations continue.

In response to the increasing danger posed by unsafe and unauthorized power lines, President William Ruto announced plans to address the problem, particularly in slum areas like Kibera in Nairobi. He revealed he had requested Parliament to allocate Sh500 million to rectify hazardous power connections in the area.

“These illegal connections have led to deadly fires and loss of property,” the President said on Sunday, while visiting victims of a recent fire outbreak in Kibera that claimed three lives. During his visit, he donated food and mattresses and assured residents that the government would cover the medical expenses of those injured in the fire.
