According to police and local residents, the upper floor of the building, which was being used by church members for prayer and worship at the time, may have weakened the structure, leading to its collapse.
The building also housed several tenants. Authorities reported that a total of 33 people were present during the incident. Seventeen individuals suffered soft tissue injuries due to the collapse of the building’s slab. The deceased was identified as 60-year-old Joseph Ogolla.
Those injured were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, while Ogolla’s body was transported to the mortuary pending an autopsy and further investigation.
Nairobi police commander George Sedah confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine how the building was being used as a place of worship within a residential setting and who approved its operations.
“It is unfortunate someone lost their life and others were hurt. We are working to establish the circumstances surrounding this tragedy,” Sedah stated.
Officials from the Nairobi County Government have also been called in to assist in the investigation. The incident comes amid ongoing complaints from residents regarding noise pollution from churches and entertainment venues operating within residential neighborhoods. Many of these establishments either operate without licenses or are improperly authorized.
Despite repeated promises from the county government to crack down on the issue, residents say the problem persists and continues to disrupt their daily lives.
