What was meant to be a celebratory event quickly turned chaotic as a section of the crowd began chanting “Ruto must go!” when Odinga took the stage to address attendees.

Footage from the event showed several people walking out of the stadium as the ODM leader continued his speech.

Odinga, who has long held significant support in the Gusii region, was joined by Kisii Governor Simba Arati, Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, and Migori Governor Ochilo Ayako at the event. Despite the interruptions, Odinga pressed on with his address, highlighting his ongoing political engagement with President William Ruto aimed at fostering national unity.

The partnership between Odinga and Ruto has been framed as a move to bridge political divides and promote collaboration in governance. Supporters of the agreement have praised it as an essential step toward national cohesion.

During the signing of the pact, President Ruto emphasized that the stability and prosperity of Kenya were the collective responsibility of all citizens, regardless of political affiliations. “The unity, stability, and prosperity of this country is not the responsibility of a few; it is the responsibility of all of us, as a nation. While we may have different political persuasions, nobody can fault unity. Nobody can fault equity,” Ruto stated.

Odinga echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the partnership was designed to benefit all Kenyans, particularly youth, women, and marginalized communities. “This unity is not about the two of us. It is for the young people, women, the marginalized… it is for all Kenyans who have felt like they have never been part of Kenya,” he remarked.
