Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has challenged President William Ruto to focus on him as his political opponent ahead of the 2027 General Election instead of continuing to criticise retired President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Speaking in Naivasha during his tour of Nakuru County, Gachagua argued that Uhuru is retired and will not be seeking election in 2027. He therefore urged Ruto to concentrate on the political rivals who are expected to face him at the ballot.

Gachagua said he should be regarded as Ruto’s political competitor rather than Uhuru.
“Wachana na Rais Uhuru Kenyatta. Hashindani na wewe. Uhuru hatakuwa kwa debe. Wewe kubali mpinzani wako, mguu ni Rigathi Gachagua. Mtapambana naye kwa debe,” he said.
He added: “Riggy G is your competitor. Uhuru is not your competitor.”
Ruto Attacks Uhuru
Gachagua’s remarks came a day after Ruto criticised his predecessor while addressing residents in Eldoret.
The President accused Uhuru of backing political figures opposed to his administration and questioned the former government’s performance in areas including affordable housing, universal healthcare and education.
Ruto challenged Kenyans to compare the achievements of the Kenyatta administration with those of his government.

He also accused Uhuru of allegedly using political allies to challenge his administration, warning that he would defeat those being sent to compete against him.
Gachagua Defends Uhuru’s Record
In response, Gachagua defended the former President’s administration while taking aim at Ruto’s government over the current economic and social situation.
He claimed Uhuru handed over a peaceful country with functioning institutions, arguing that the situation had deteriorated since Ruto took office.
The former Deputy President also criticised the government’s handling of education, claiming that the previous administration provided greater support to schools and universities.
On the economy, Gachagua argued that Kenyans were financially better off when Uhuru left office.
“Uhuru alikuachia watu wakiwa na pesa mifukoni, lakini sasa hawana chochote,” he said.
He accused Ruto of avoiding responsibility by blaming his predecessor for the challenges facing the country.
Gachagua Rules Out Uhuru’s Return to the Ballot
Gachagua dismissed suggestions that Uhuru is actively sponsoring candidates against Ruto, insisting that the retired President has already served his constitutional two terms.
He argued that Uhuru has no reason to be at the centre of the 2027 presidential contest because he cannot seek another term.
“Where does Uhuru come in this competition? He has served for 10 years, and he won’t be elected again,” Gachagua said.
He maintained that the political contest ahead would involve him and Ruto, pointing to the political fallout between the two leaders after their successful 2022 presidential campaign.
With the 2027 elections approaching, Gachagua’s remarks further underline the growing political rivalry between him and Ruto, as both sides seek to build support ahead of the next General Election.
