Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has died, according to an announcement made by Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi on Monday, September 7, 2026.
Ndejembi said Ameir died at approximately 8 am at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, where he had been receiving treatment for a heart condition. Delivering the announcement, the Vice President expressed his condolences to President Samia, her family, relatives, and the people of Tanzania following her husband’s passing.

Ndejembi confirmed that funeral arrangements were already underway in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar, an area with deep family roots.
Ameir, 66, had spent nearly five decades married to President Samia, having wed in 1978. The couple had four children — three sons and a daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, who currently serves in the Zanzibar House of Representatives.
Despite his wife’s prominent political rise, Ameir maintained a notably private life, rarely stepping into the public spotlight even after Samia became Tanzania’s first female president in March 2021, following the death of former President John Magufuli. Ameir built his career as an agriculturalist and academic, having served as an agriculture officer before retiring from government service.
Kenyan President William Ruto was among the first regional leaders to send condolences, describing Ameir as a lifelong companion to President Samia and a devoted father. In a message posted on social media, Ruto extended sympathies on behalf of the Government and people of Kenya, as well as his own family, praying for comfort and strength for President Samia during this difficult period.
