Hindu Council Donates 50 Water Tanks in Laikipia

Laikipia County and the Hindu Council of Kenya have joined forces to tackle the issue of water scarcity in the region.

At a ceremony held in Rumuruti, the Council generously donated 50 water tanks, each holding 3,000 liters, to local women as part of the Jal Seva Water Project kick-off.

Governor Joshua Irungu expressed appreciation to HCK on behalf of Laikipia’s residents, emphasizing the goal of distributing water tanks to 50,000 women over the next three years. Already, over 400 women in Rumuruti Ward have signed up for consideration.

The Jal Seva Water Project, spearheaded by HCK Chairperson Sujatha Kotamraju, aims to improve water accessibility through initiatives like borehole drilling, water harvesting, and irrigation.

Governor Irungu assured continuous weekly distributions for those who didn’t receive tanks initially, urging women to utilize them for irrigation and vegetable farming to enhance family nutrition and self-reliance.

Sonvir Singh, HCK Vice Chairperson, highlighted the organization’s commitment to humanitarian endeavors, emphasizing their gratitude for the opportunity to contribute positively to society.

HCK, representing 170 Hindu organizations across Kenya, has a track record of engaging in community projects such as school feeding programs and medical camps.

Dr. Singh recalled the governor’s poignant remarks about the challenges faced by women and children in fetching water over long distances and the wastage of rainwater, which motivated HCK to take action.

The scarcity of permanent water sources in many parts of Laikipia forces residents to endure arduous journeys, sometimes up to 10 kilometers, for water, creating physical hardships and increasing conflicts with wildlife over limited water resources.
