Two children aged two and four have died after a fire broke out in their room at Mbumbuni Market in Makueni County.
Police said the incident happened on Thursday, September 10, 2026, after a tenant noticed smoke coming from one of the rooms and alerted the authorities.
Officers who responded to the scene found the two children had died in the fire.
According to police, the children’s mother, who works as a casual employee at Kisau Hospital, had left them inside the house before locking the door. She reportedly returned to find the room engulfed in flames.

Police processed the scene before transferring the children’s bodies to the mortuary at Tawa Sub-County Hospital, where they were preserved awaiting postmortem examinations.
The mother was taken into police custody to assist with investigations as authorities worked to establish the cause of the fire.
Man Arrested Over Suspected Poisoning of Child in Kakamega
In a separate incident in Khwisero, Kakamega County, police arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with the suspected poisoning and death of a two-year-old boy in Emusoto Village.
The child’s 23-year-old mother told police that her son began vomiting severely shortly after her boyfriend served him tea at their home on Wednesday, September 9.
The boy was rushed to Khwisero Level IV Hospital for medical attention but died while receiving treatment.
Police visited the family’s home in Emusoto Village, Emalindi Sub-location, Kisa South Location, as part of investigations into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.
Investigators suspect the boy may have been poisoned following a disagreement between the suspect and the mother regarding the child’s paternity.
The 20-year-old suspect was arrested and remained in police custody as investigations continued.
Officers processed and documented the scene before the child’s body was taken to Sonak Hospital Mortuary, where it was preserved pending a postmortem examination.
