Uhuru Quits Azimio: What His Resignation Letter Really Says

Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta has resigned from his leadership role in the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition, saying it is time for a new generation to take the helm of the political alliance.

In a letter dated October 5, Uhuru informed Azimio leaders that his resignation took effect immediately after the formal handover of the Jubilee Party leadership. He stressed that the move should not be read as walking away from the coalition or the political journey that united its member parties, describing it instead as a necessary part of renewing democratic institutions.

Uhuru said Azimio was never meant to be a short-term arrangement of convenience, but a lasting covenant built on conviction and on the need for Kenya’s diverse political voices to protect democracy and advance national development. Using the image of a river, he said parties joining a coalition were like tributaries that keep their identities while combining to form a current strong enough to reshape the landscape.

He said his role had been to guide the coalition and shield it from internal division. Leadership, he added, was not about clinging to position but about having the courage to step aside and let the next generation steer.

The retired president also urged Azimio to remain broad and inclusive, offering political space to Kenyans who believe in the rule of law and democratic governance. He voiced gratitude for the trust placed in him and confidence in the coalition’s collective strength.

Uhuru assured Azimio leaders he would remain a committed member of the Azimio family, supporting it from the ranks and offering counsel whenever called upon.

His resignation follows the formal handover of Jubilee Party leadership and marks a significant shift in his role within the opposition coalition.
