Raila Odinga Junior has appealed to the Luo Nyanza community to stand together as he honoured his late father, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, at the official commissioning of the elder Odinga’s mausoleum.
Speaking at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi on Wednesday, Raila Junior thanked President William Ruto for what he described as major contributions to the region and urged residents to back the president’s re-election bid. Addressing the people of the lake region, he said unity was strength and that the family remained one.

The ceremony, presided over by Ruto, comes as the country marks a year since the death of Raila Odinga, who died on October 15, 2025, aged 80. His career in public life included a stint as prime minister and many years as opposition leader.
Reflecting on the project, the younger Odinga said the mausoleum marked a key milestone in a journey that began with the aim of creating a dignified resting place and lasting monument for his father.
He also used the occasion to restate his plan to run for the Kibra parliamentary seat in the 2027 General Election, a post once held by his father. He asked the crowd for their support.

Gender, Culture, the Arts and Heritage Cabinet Secretary Hannah Cheptumo said the commissioning was an important step in safeguarding the late leader’s history and legacy. She said the site should be seen as more than a building, calling it a store of memory, history and identity where future generations can learn about Raila and his times.

The mausoleum was built through the Kenya Defence Forces and will now pass to the stewardship of the National Museums of Kenya, a move expected to strengthen its preservation and interpretation. It is expected to become a significant heritage site at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi.
