Kindiki Targets 3-Day Passport Issuance by November 2024

Interior Cabinet Secretary nominee Kithure Kindiki has announced that the Ministry has resolved the passport backlog issue.

When Kindiki took office in 2022, passport applications and collections were significantly delayed, but this situation has now been addressed.

He explained, “We have settled all outstanding bills with suppliers, upgraded our printing equipment for passport personalization, enhanced our ICT system, and reduced the backlog from 784,000 to zero.”

Starting August 1, the ministry will process passport applications within seven days, a target they have already met for the past month. They aim to further reduce the waiting period to three days by November 1, 2024.

Kindiki acknowledged that while progress is being made, challenges remain, particularly with tackling corruption among staff. Although the ministry has hired around 120 new employees, he admitted that corruption has not been fully eradicated.

“If reappointed, I will work to ensure we clean up the entire department,” Kindiki said.
