Kithure Kindiki, the nominee for Interior Cabinet Secretary, has clarified why he has not resigned despite pressure from some leaders and civil rights groups over police-related killings.
During his vetting session, Kindiki stated that as a CS, he sets policies rather than directs operations. He responded to Kathiani MP Robert Mbui, who questioned his decision not to resign despite numerous alleged police-related murders.
Mbui noted over 100 deaths in the past two years and compared the situation to the resignation of US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle following an assassination attempt on Donald Trump.
Kindiki asserted that resignation would only be considered if his policy directives were found to be unconstitutional or illegal.
He added, “The honorable member mentioned the resignation of the Secret Service Director and drew a parallel with our Inspector General’s resignation. However, the minister in the US did not resign, so I don’t understand why a Kenyan minister must.”
Kindiki, who previously served in President William Ruto’s dissolved Cabinet, has been re-nominated to the Interior Ministry following the Cabinet’s dismissal.
Five other Cabinet Secretaries are scheduled to face the vetting panel this Thursday.
