Manchester United suffered a stunning 2-0 defeat to newly promoted Hull City in their opening match of the 2026-27 Premier League season.
United fell behind just 17 minutes in when Semi Ajayi smashed home from a corner, and Hull doubled their surprise lead in the 38th minute through a powerful header from Nobel Mendy. Both goals came from set pieces delivered into United’s box, exposing clear defensive vulnerabilities. Although United pushed harder in the second half, they never looked capable of salvaging anything from a disappointing start to the season.

The match had been preceded by some positive buzz for United, with the unveiling of Marcus Rashford’s new squad number — he will wear the No. 9 shirt this season following his return from a loan spell at Barcelona. However, Rashford was named among the substitutes and only entered the game at halftime.
Even Rashford’s introduction couldn’t help United overturn the two-goal deficit in what marked Michael Carrick’s first league match as the club’s permanent head coach. He, like many of his teammates, struggled to make an impact in an underwhelming team performance — a display that underscored just how far United still have to go to recapture the glory days under Sir Alex Ferguson, having last won the Premier League title back in 2013. Based on this showing, a title challenge appears unlikely this season.

Hull City, managed by Sergej Jakirovic, finished sixth in last season’s Championship but capitalized on the “Spygate” controversy that cost Southampton their playoff spot, going on to win promotion via a victory at Wembley Stadium. While many critics predicted a difficult debut season for Hull in the top flight, their opening match at the KC Stadium could hardly have gone better.
Hull midfielder Regan Slater, whose free kick set up the second goal, described the win as massive, telling TNT Sports that the significance of the result was clear to everyone at the club, and that they had simply picked up where they left off.
For Carrick and Manchester United, attention now turns to preparing for next weekend’s home fixture against another newly promoted side, Ipswich Town, at Old Trafford.
