Kenya Airways (KQ) has completed its first dedicated live animal charter between Kenya and Nigeria, transporting more than 50 cattle from Nairobi to Lagos.

KQ Cargo Director Fitsum Abadi said the successful delivery demonstrated the airline’s capacity to manage specialised cargo services and facilitate trade across the African continent.
Abadi noted that transporting live animals requires careful planning, specialised handling and coordination throughout the journey to ensure their safety and welfare.

The shipment was carried under the airline’s KQ Live service, which incorporates animal welfare measures such as proper ventilation and temperature control during transportation.
The development forms part of Kenya Airways’ strategy to diversify its cargo business beyond conventional freight and expand into specialised shipments.
The airline is targeting several cargo categories, including live animals, pharmaceutical products, perishable goods, dangerous goods and e-commerce deliveries.

According to the airline, expanding into these areas is expected to diversify cargo revenue streams and boost earnings from specialised freight services.
Kenya Airways also plans to leverage additional widebody aircraft capacity and strategic partnerships to support the expansion, while strengthening Nairobi’s position as a regional air cargo hub.

The latest operation highlights the potential for air transport to support trade between African countries by providing specialised logistics solutions for different industries.
