Wiper Breaks Silence on Claims Linking Kalonzo to Sifuna

Wiper Patriotic Front has dismissed claims that its leader, Kalonzo Musyoka, is scheduled to meet Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) officials on Monday to discuss supporting Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s 2027 presidential ambitions.

The party, through its spokesperson and lawyer Ndegwa Njiru, rejected the claims made by DCP Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala, who had announced plans to engage Kalonzo over Sifuna’s candidacy.

Malala said DCP had settled on Sifuna as its preferred candidate to represent the Opposition in the race against President William Ruto and was reaching out to other leaders to build support for his bid.

He cited a recent meeting between DCP leader Rigathi Gachagua and Sifuna, saying the two leaders were united in their political direction.

Malala added that the party intended to hold discussions with Kalonzo to persuade him to support the Nairobi senator.

“On Monday, we are going to meet Kalonzo. In DCP, we have agreed Sifuna is up to the task,” Malala said.

However, Njiru dismissed the announcement, accusing Malala of promoting divisions within the Opposition at a time when leaders are expected to work towards a united front ahead of the 2027 General Election.

He urged the media to disregard the claims, describing Malala’s remarks as political theatrics rather than a serious announcement.

Njiru further accused the DCP deputy leader of attempting to undermine unity efforts among opposition leaders.

The exchange highlights growing disagreements over who should lead the Opposition’s presidential campaign as parties consider possible alliances to challenge Ruto in the next election.

The dispute comes days after Gachagua returned from an almost two-month tour of the United States and met leaders associated with the Linda Mwananchi movement, which Sifuna is linked to.

During the engagement, Gachagua disclosed that the leaders had discussed possible cooperation ahead of the 2027 elections, fuelling speculation about emerging political partnerships within the Opposition.

Kalonzo, meanwhile, has continued positioning himself as a possible presidential candidate for a united opposition coalition, citing his political experience and leadership credentials.

Other figures associated with the contest for the Opposition’s presidential ticket include Martha Karua of the People’s Liberation Party, Fred Matiang’i of the Jubilee Party and Justin Muturi of the Democratic Party.

Sifuna has also attracted attention as a potential contender following his political engagement with Gachagua and his association with the Linda Mwananchi movement.

With several leaders reportedly interested in the top position, pressure is mounting on opposition parties to agree on a common candidate and strategy before the 2027 polls.

The Opposition has not yet formally settled on a joint presidential candidate, leaving negotiations over leadership, regional representation and vote consolidation ongoing.
