The delegation, comprising eight members of the UK All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Global Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights, wrapped up their visit on Saturday, April 12. They commended Kenya’s dedication to improving maternal health, expanding access to family planning services, and tackling issues like teenage pregnancy, HIV, and gender-based violence.

The visit was organized in collaboration with UNFPA, MSI Reproductive Choices, and the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF).

During a high-level meeting with Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, the MPs were briefed on Kenya’s strategic focus areas, including bolstering community health systems and ensuring a consistent supply of reproductive health commodities.

“Our aim is to lower maternal death rates and ensure that all Kenyans can access quality reproductive health care,” said Duale.

The lawmakers toured health facilities in Nairobi and Homa Bay, where they met with healthcare providers, civil society representatives, fellow legislators, and youth-led organizations.

These engagements gave them valuable insights into the real-world impact of UK-funded programmes and the experiences of both service providers and beneficiaries.

“The efforts by partners in Kenya are truly inspiring and will not only benefit women and girls but also boost the broader economy,” said Labour MP Leigh Ingham, who led the delegation. “Lifting up women and girls uplifts everyone.”

Call for Greater Investment

The tour also highlighted the urgent need for increased national investment in SRHR and reinforced the importance of continued international support.

The MPs pledged to champion Kenya’s cause within the UK Parliament and push for stronger global cooperation to advance reproductive health.

UNFPA Kenya Representative Anders Thomsen welcomed the visit, emphasizing the importance of such partnerships.

“These collaborations are key to driving change in communities. We’re grateful to the UK parliamentarians for their ongoing support and for selecting Kenya for this impactful tour,” Thomsen said.

The UK remains a significant donor to UNFPA and a committed advocate for global sexual and reproductive health rights—a commitment the visiting MPs reaffirmed as they concluded their mission with renewed calls for sustained investment in health systems that empower women and girls.
