Bomet County authorities are investigating the death of a murder suspect who reportedly took his own life while in custody at Longisa Police Station.
The deceased, 33-year-old Antony Njenga Kariuki, is said to have hanged himself using his socks inside a toilet cell, temporarily halting operations at the station.
Bomet East Sub-County Police Commander Michal Singa confirmed that Kariuki had been arrested in connection with the alleged killing of his girlfriend, Caroline Ngetich, a teacher at Cheptagum Secondary School in Chepalungu Sub-County.
The alleged murder reportedly occurred about a week ago at a business premises where the couple lived. Ngetich was strangled, and her body was later discovered outside the compound.
“The scene has been processed, and the victim’s body has been taken to Longisa Hospital mortuary,” said Commander Singa. “Investigations are ongoing into both the homicide and the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death while in custody.”
Police have vowed a thorough inquiry into the incident, which has raised concerns about the handling of suspects in custody.
