English actor Tim Curry, best known for his iconic portrayal of Dr Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, has died aged 80.
Curry first took on the flamboyant character on stage before reprising the role in the 1975 film adaptation. Although the movie was not an immediate box-office success, it eventually became a global cult classic and is regarded as one of the longest-running theatrical releases in cinema history.

Beyond Rocky Horror, Curry enjoyed a diverse career spanning film, television and theatre. He famously portrayed the terrifying Pennywise in the 1990 television adaptation of Stephen King’s It and played Long John Silver in Muppet Treasure Island in 1996.
His other film credits included Annie, The Hunt for Red October, Home Alone 2, Clue, Legend and Congo. On Broadway, he earned three Tony Award nominations.

Born in Cheshire in 1946, Curry began his professional acting career after university when he joined the original London production of the groundbreaking rock musical Hair in 1968.
Five years later, fellow Hair cast member Richard O’Brien invited Curry to audition for his new musical. Curry was cast as Dr Frank-N-Furter, the eccentric scientist whose outrageous persona became one of his most memorable performances.
The production opened at London’s Royal Court in 1973 before gaining popularity and eventually being adapted for the big screen. The film featured Curry alongside Susan Sarandon, Barry Bostwick and O’Brien.
Curry’s career continued across several genres, with performances ranging from comedy and fantasy to horror and mystery. In later years, he focused increasingly on voice acting and appearances at film conventions.
In 2012, Curry suffered a major stroke and subsequently used a wheelchair, but he continued working in the entertainment industry. He also released his memoir, Vagabond, last year.
Grand Central Publishing mourned his death, describing Curry as an exceptional talent whose work had left a lasting impression on generations of audiences.
The Los Angeles Police Department confirmed that officers responded to a death investigation involving an 80-year-old man at around 23:23 local time on Tuesday.
Curry leaves behind a celebrated legacy that spans stage, film and television, with his portrayal of Frank-N-Furter remaining one of the defining performances of his career.
