Wamuchomba Reveals the Real Reason Politicians Make Loud Declarations

Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba has defended her political moves following her exit from President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA), describing politics as a game in which leaders pursue interests aimed at protecting their constituents.

Wamuchomba announced her departure from the party on Thursday, October 8. In an interview over the weekend with Radio Africa’s Gukena FM, she urged Kenyans to let politicians play their game, saying wananchi often do not understand the games leaders play.

She suggested that political positioning can determine whether constituencies receive government resources. If a politician senses that their people could be denied a budgetary allocation because of their political stand, she said, they must make their declaration loudly so that the allocation is made.

Her remarks come days after she left UDA, accusing the Kenya Kwanza administration of failing to honour promises on reforms in the coffee and tea sectors. Both industries are economically important in the Mt Kenya region, where farmers have repeatedly demanded better prices, improved payment systems and reforms to long-standing challenges in the value chains.

Wamuchomba has not yet said which party ticket she will use to defend her Githunguri seat, and her next move is likely to draw attention as rival parties seek to consolidate support in Mt Kenya.

Her exit follows that of Nakuru Senator Tabitha Karanja, who announced on Friday, October 9, that she would vie for the Nakuru governor seat in 2027 on a Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) ticket. The departures point to shifting loyalties as leaders reassess their alliances and electoral interests ahead of the next General Election.
