Nyandarua Senator John Methu has alleged that State operatives tried to persuade him to form his own political party after the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) won the Ol Kalou by-election on July 16.
Methu, the DCP Secretary-General designate, said the overtures were meant to draw him into opposition leadership and later align him with President William Ruto as a possible running mate. He and Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia led DCP’s campaigns in Ol Kalou, where the party’s candidate, Sammy Kamau Ngotho, won the parliamentary seat.

In an interview on Sunday night, Methu said he turned down the idea after consulting Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, who he said advised against splitting the Mt Kenya political base. According to Methu, Nyoro assured him that he would join their party to avoid dividing votes in the region. He said he was therefore shocked to learn that Nyoro had formed his own party, a development he said raised questions about future cooperation among leaders from the region.

The claims, which have not been independently verified, point to growing tension over parties and alliances as leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Methu also voiced confidence in Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka, citing his opposition to the 2024 impeachment of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. He said Kalonzo showed loyalty by standing with Gachagua when it was unfashionable to do so.
The senator further dismissed claims that former President Uhuru Kenyatta was financing the opposition, insisting that neither he nor Gachagua had received any money from the retired president.
