ODM Party Leader Oburu Oginga speaking during a tour in Migori on March 1, 2026 / HANDOUT

Meet Me at the NDC, Oburu Tells Critics Questioning His Leadership

Oburu Oginga has called on those disputing his position as leader of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to attend the party’s upcoming National Delegates Conference scheduled for March 27, saying the forum will provide a legitimate and democratic space to address the controversy.

Speaking amid claims that his leadership was not formally endorsed through a properly constituted NDC, Oburu maintained that the party has officially convened the meeting and urged his critics to present their objections before delegates. He insisted that the conference, as ODM’s supreme decision-making organ, has the authority to ratify major resolutions, including leadership confirmations.

Oburu challenged those branding him illegitimate to appear before party members and make their case openly. He expressed confidence that delegates would ultimately decide the matter and settle the debate within the party’s constitutional framework.

The National Delegates Conference is expected to draw party officials, elected representatives, and delegates from across the country at a time when internal tensions within ODM continue to simmer. The party recently confirmed plans to hold the NDC on March 27, 2026, as it prepares for the next general elections.

However, divisions remain evident. Babu Owino, the Embakasi East MP, has openly criticised the circumstances surrounding Oburu’s elevation to party leadership following the death of Raila Odinga. He argued that the transition was rushed and lacked transparency, questioning why the leadership change occurred so soon after Odinga’s passing.

Babu maintained that any legitimate NDC must strictly follow party procedures, including proper auditing of delegates and a clearly outlined agenda. He further stated that only the party’s Secretary-General, Edwin Sifuna, has the mandate to convene such a meeting, warning that any gathering called outside established structures would not qualify as a valid NDC.

While affirming his respect for Oburu as a senior leader, Babu emphasised that safeguarding public trust and upholding due process should take precedence. He cautioned against what he described as procedural shortcuts, stressing that leaders elected by the public must remain accountable and transparent in their conduct.

As the March 27 conference approaches, attention now turns to whether the NDC will calm the growing internal disputes or deepen the wrangles within the party.
