Trade Unions Applaud President Ruto’s Cabinet Dissolution

The Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) has endorsed President William Ruto’s decision to dissolve the Cabinet, describing it as bold and decisive.

In a statement, Secretary General Francis Atwoli expressed that this move is a crucial step towards addressing the concerns and hopes of Kenyans.

“Today’s decision by President William Ruto to dissolve the Cabinet represents a significant stride towards this much-needed renewal. This bold and decisive action reflects a modern approach to addressing the grievances and aspirations of the Kenyan people,” he remarked.

Atwoli emphasized the importance of having a Cabinet that not only defends government policies but also effectively communicates the needs and priorities of the nation.

He further underscored the necessity of competent and experienced individuals in the Cabinet, committed to serving all citizens’ interests and ensuring accountability.

Leaders from diverse political backgrounds also supported President Ruto’s decision to dissolve the cabinet as a step in the right direction.

“Removing all Cabinet Secretaries is a solid beginning,” said Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna.

“The deed is done. Thank you President William Ruto,” stated Azimio spokesperson Makau Mutua.

President William Ruto announced the dismissal of all Cabinet Secretaries except Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi. He indicated plans for consultations across various sectors and political groups.

Additionally, he pledged extensive consultations to establish an inclusive government aimed at accelerating reforms and curbing inefficiencies.

“After careful consideration and attentive listening to the voices of Kenyans, and after a comprehensive assessment of my Cabinet’s achievements and challenges, I have, under the authority granted by Article 152(1) and 152(5)(b) of the Constitution and Section 12 of the Office of the Attorney-General Act, decided to dismiss all Cabinet Secretaries and the Attorney-General from the Cabinet of the Republic of Kenya, except the Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, with immediate effect,” Ruto stated.

These changes follow weeks of persistent criticism, particularly from Generation Z, who argued that Cabinet Secretaries had failed, prompting calls for a governmental overhaul.

What began as protests against the contentious Finance Bill 2024 swiftly evolved into demands for comprehensive governmental restructuring, with Generation Z chanting “Ruto Must Go.” Ultimately, President Ruto opted against enacting the bill due to ongoing demonstrations.

The protests, involving thousands of youth, escalated into violent confrontations with law enforcement, resulting in tragic casualties.

The nation witnessed severe instances of police brutality, with over 40 protesters killed and more than 300 injured, drawing condemnation both domestically and internationally.
