When will the English Premier League champion be crowned?

Manchester City drew 3-3 against Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, in a Premier League (EPL) match played on Monday, May 04, 2026.

13 minutes of sheer excitement for Manchester City in the second half of a thrilling six-goal thriller may have cost City their place in the Premier League title race.

Monday’s match was one of the best matches of the season, and its result after the end was a surprise that could have a major impact on the end of the season.

Pep Guardiola’s team started with a 1-0 lead through Jeremy Doku, but conceded three goals in 13 minutes through Thierno Barry who scored twice, one assisted by a mistake by Marc Guehi and Jake O’Brien who scored with a header.

However, Erling Haaland immediately reduced the deficit, and Belgian winger Jeremy Doku equalised for City with a stunning late goal, but City have dropped crucial points in the title race to leaders Arsenal.

This means that the fate of the championship is now firmly in Arsenal’s hands, but when exactly will the championship be decided?

When can the EPL championship be decided?

After their draw against Everton, the highest possible score Manchester City can achieve this season is 83.

Arsenal currently have 76 points, so they know that a win in their remaining three matches will give them the championship, as they will reach 85 points.

Arsenal’s goal difference is also four goals better than City’s, giving them a slight advantage.

But there are circumstances in which Mikel Arteta’s team could win the championship as early as next Wednesday, May 13.

If Arsenal beat West Ham on Sunday and Manchester City lose to Brentford the day before, then City lose again to Crystal Palace a few days later, Arsenal will be champions with two games in hand.

But if both teams continue to win, the championship race will go until the end of the season.

“This move is a big blow to Manchester City in the title race, but they have to pull themselves together and move on,” said former Blackpool player Charlie Adam on BBC Radio 5 Live.

There is still the possibility of a shocking or surprising outcome in the race.

This match at Hill Dickinson Stadium looked difficult for City before the game, and it ultimately proved to be so, as they dropped two crucial points against a team that is vying for a place in next season’s European competition.

“(A draw) is better than a loss,” said Pep Guardiola of the 3-3 draw. “It shows the kind of team we played against.”

“[The championship] is not in our hands anymore. It was in our hands before, now it’s not there. We still have games left. We’ll see what happens.”

Arsenal now know that winning their remaining three games will give them their first title since 2004.

Former Arsenal striker Thierry Henry said on Sky Sports: “I don’t think they can accept losing points now, but it’s true that it’s in their hands. That’s a fact.”

“I’ll stay in my place, I won’t celebrate early. Things are still going on.”

Direction and remaining matches

City have three home games against Brentford, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa to be played on the final day of the season (May 24).

Their remaining away game is against Bournemouth. This is the toughest of the remaining matches in terms of conditions and ability. Bournemouth are showing the best form, but also the match will be played three days after the FA Cup final against Chelsea.

While City are aiming to win the domestic treble, Arsenal now have a chance to win two trophies, the Premier League and the Champions League.

Arsenal will face West Ham away, then relegated Burnley at home, before the final game against Crystal Palace away.

Thierry Henry said: “I’m worried about the game against West Ham. Just like I was worried about City today.”

Former England captain Wayne Rooney said that he believes Arsenal will win all their remaining matches and clinch the title.

He said: “We’ve heard a lot about Arsenal not being able to cope with pressure, but now it’s different. I think this is their year.”
