Suluhu to Ruto: Let’s Act Tough on Gen Zs

Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has urged stronger collaboration with William Ruto to address unrest linked to youth groups, warning that stability in East Africa depends on unity rather than division.

Suluhu revealed that she had held talks with Ruto on how to respond to what she described as disruptive behavior by young people, including groups crossing borders and causing disturbances.

She emphasized the need for both nations to set aside political differences and work together to maintain order, noting that instability in one country can easily spill over into its neighbors.

According to Suluhu, both leaders agreed on the importance of taking firm action against what she termed indiscipline among some youths, regardless of nationality.

She stated that individuals engaging in unlawful activities should face consequences in whichever country they are found, stressing equal treatment for both Tanzanian and Kenyan offenders.

The Tanzanian leader also called for respect for national laws and cultural values, adding that democratic practices in East Africa should reflect local traditions and social contexts rather than copying external models.

Suluhu made the remarks on Monday during a Memorandum of Understanding signing ceremony at State House in Dar es Salaam, where President Ruto is on a two-day state visit. The two leaders also oversaw the signing of eight agreements aimed at boosting cooperation between Kenya and Tanzania in key sectors.
