Messi Breaks Silence on 2026 World Cup Plans

Lionel Messi has hinted at the possibility of playing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying he would love to defend Argentina’s title — though his participation will depend on his fitness and form as he nears 39.

The Argentine captain, who recently extended his contract with Inter Miami until 2028, told NBC News that he plans to evaluate his physical condition during the next preseason before deciding whether to join the squad for the tournament, which will take place across the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

“It would be incredible to take part in another World Cup. I’d love to be there and contribute if I’m fit enough,” Messi said. “I’ll see how I feel next year with Inter Miami and decide if I can still give 100% to the national team.”

Messi, an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner, has enjoyed an illustrious 20-year career since making his professional debut for Barcelona in 2004. He later played for Paris Saint-Germain before moving to Inter Miami in 2023, where he has played a key role in boosting the popularity of football in North America ahead of the World Cup.

After years of near misses, Messi finally achieved international glory by winning the 2021 Copa América and the 2022 World Cup — defeating France in a dramatic penalty shootout.

“That World Cup win was the dream of my life,” he reflected. “It completed everything I ever wanted to achieve in football.”

Messi has represented Argentina 195 times, scoring 114 goals — both national records. If he takes part in 2026, it would mark his sixth World Cup appearance, further cementing his legacy as one of the greatest players in football history.
