9-Year-Old Hero Saves 9 Lives in Tragic Murang’a Matatu Crash

A 9-year-old boy from Murang’a County is being praised for his bravery after helping save nine people in the tragic Kiama River matatu accident on Saturday night in Gatanga.

Boniface Njoroge, a Grade 3 pupil at Gatunguru Primary School, was travelling with his parents when the matatu plunged into the river. Acting swiftly, he jumped out of the sinking vehicle and ran to a nearby shopping centre to alert residents for help.

His mother, Alice Wangeshi, recounted that as the vehicle filled with water, she feared her son had drowned—only to later learn that his courageous move was what led to their rescue.

Tragically, Boniface’s father, Paul Karanja, was among six people who lost their lives in the accident, including five members of one family who were returning from a dowry ceremony in Kiambu County.

Murang’a County Commissioner Charles Muriithi confirmed the incident, noting that it happened around midnight on the Chomo–Kahunyu Road. Survivors were taken to Kirwara Level Four and Murang’a Level Five hospitals for treatment.
