Tanzania’s Vice President, Dr Emmanuel John Nchimbi, has announced his resignation from office and confirmed that he will retire from public service and active politics effective September 4, 2026.
In a public notice issued on August 25, 2026, by the Office of the Vice President in Dodoma, Nchimbi said he had formally submitted his resignation to President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

He cited Articles 50(2)(c) and 149(2) of Tanzania’s Constitution as the legal basis for his resignation, paving the way for President Hassan to appoint a new Vice President.
Nchimbi said his decision was also in line with a commitment he made to President Hassan a year ago, when he promised to serve the country faithfully and step aside whenever the President deemed a change necessary.
Reflecting on that pledge, he said he was convinced that President Hassan now wanted a change and had therefore decided to honour his word.
The outgoing Vice President thanked President Hassan and the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party for entrusting him with the position.
He also expressed appreciation to Tanzanians for their support throughout his years in public service, assuring them that he would continue serving the country as a patriotic citizen even after leaving politics.
