By: BBC

US President Donald Trump said his country’s military had attacked and destroyed seven small Iranian military boats in the Strait of Hormuz, as the military situation in the world’s vital shipping lane continues to be volatile.

According to US military reports, the attacks were carried out using helicopters. However, Iran has yet to confirm or deny the claims.

The operation is part of a US program called “Project Freedom”, which according to Trump aims to help stranded ships and seafarers safely leave the Strait of Hormuz.

However, Iran continues to insist that the door remains closed and has claimed to have fired warning shots at US submarines, a claim that Washington has strongly denied.

The US military operation involves more than 100 warships and aircraft, as well as approximately 15,000 troops.
