71-Year-Old Treks for 11 Days to Mark Mashujaa Day in Kitui

Stephen Kariuki, a 71-year-old resident of Nakuru County, has walked for hundreds of kilometres to attend this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui.

Kariuki recalls being a young boy during Kenya’s independence and says he couldn’t actively participate in the liberation struggle. To honour those who did, he has made it his annual tradition to walk to every Mashujaa Day venue across the country.

Travelling solo, Kariuki set off from Nakuru 11 days ago, arriving in Kitui on the evening of October 19. Along the way, he carried a backpack, a Kenyan flag, and a three-legged stool painted in the national colours.

He says the long trek represents his deep sense of patriotism and his tribute to the heroes who sacrificed their lives for Kenya’s freedom.

After the celebrations, Kariuki plans to raise some money from his grandchildren and friends to take a matatu back home — a journey he describes as a rewarding and meaningful tradition.
