ODM Youth Reject Alliance with Gachagua

The ODM Youth League has firmly rejected any possibility of partnering with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in future political coalitions, saying his leadership style and values conflict with their principles.

In a statement issued by ODM Youth League representative Kasmuel McOure, the youth wing emphasized that while they support coalition politics, they will not back alliances involving leaders whose ideologies they consider regressive.

“We shall not be part of any formation that includes Rigathi Gachagua as a principal. No matter how persuasive any leader may be, they will not convince us to work with him,” McOure declared.

He said Gachagua’s political outlook does not reflect the aspirations of reform-minded young Kenyans, recalling his stance during the Finance Bill protests, where he reportedly supported punishing ODM lawmakers who voted against the bill.

“He should not pretend to have opposed the Finance Bill. He is on record saying they would ‘teach ODM legislators who voted NO a lesson,’” McOure said.

The youth leader further accused Gachagua of attempting to portray youth-led protests as tools for political negotiation rather than genuine calls for reform.

“As one who was part of the movement, I speak for all of us when I say: We reject Rigathi Gachagua,” he added.

McOure reaffirmed the youth wing’s commitment to the broad-based alliance that the late Raila Odinga championed, urging ODM leaders to ensure youth participation in decision-making processes.

He also challenged the Kenya Kwanza administration to speed up efforts on economic empowerment, social justice, and police reforms, saying these were non-negotiable conditions for continued youth support.

“We expect economic, social, and political empowerment, comprehensive police reforms, and compensation for victims of police brutality as a matter of urgency,” he said.

McOure concluded by stressing that the ODM Youth League will continue holding all leaders accountable, regardless of political affiliation, to ensure genuine youth inclusion and progress.
