Zablon Ndale, the singer behind “Mzabibu,” Unhappy with viral dance trend

Zablon Ndale, renowned for his song “Mzabibu,” voiced his dissatisfaction with the widespread dance challenge associated with his music.

Speaking from his home in Junda, Mombasa County, during an interview with Mo FM, Ndale conveyed his concerns, stating that the viral dance has diluted the gospel essence of the song.

While acknowledging the role of the catchy dance in boosting the song’s popularity, Ndale intends to create a video that stays true to the spiritual theme of “Mzabibu.”

The original dance, performed in 2014 with the Ajumbe ya Bwana choir from Kongowea Baptist in Mombasa, was characterized by its modest and traditional nature, according to Ndale.

He observed that on social media platforms, people are now interpreting the dance in various styles that may deviate from the song’s intended gospel message.

Ndale stressed the importance of preserving the song’s seriousness and plans to release a video that reflects its true essence.

Explaining the recent surge in popularity, particularly since January 2024, Ndale attributed it to the song’s message and the grace of God.

Despite occasional plays over the years, “Mzabibu” gained widespread attention, a development Ndale believes was divinely orchestrated.

Addressing misconceptions about the song’s lyrics, Ndale clarified that it is inspired by the gospel of John, Chapter 15, where Jesus refers to himself as the true vine.

He specifically highlighted Verse 16, where Jesus speaks about appointing believers to bear fruit.

Ndale revealed that he took a hiatus from recording new music after the decline of CD and cassette tape formats in the early 2000s.

He appealed for support to produce new songs, expressing his desire to make further contributions to the gospel music industry.

The viral dance trend originated from a TikTok video by user @aggie.kamau, featuring dancing inside a kiosk.

The challenge gained rapid traction as numerous users, including @official_mickey_, embraced and popularized the unique dance moves.

In his rendition, @official_mickey_ sported distinctive attire, including green pants and an olive shirt, while incorporating comical shuffling and lively footwork synchronized with the song’s tempo.

The challenge has seen significant participation from Kenyans, with thousands showcasing their creative interpretations, some even opting for shirtless performances or dancing in unconventional settings like classrooms.

Participants aim to emulate the ambiance of the early 1970s, adding to the novelty and appeal of the viral trend.
