Stay Alive This Christmas: The Safety Message Everyone Needs to Hear

By: Florence Atieno, Laikipia University

As Christmas approaches, excitement is building. Families are traveling, friends are planning reunions and communities across the country are preparing to celebrate.

But while this season brings joy, it also calls for extra caution to protect ourselves and those around us.

Every festive season sees heavier travel, crowded events and a spike in road accidents — many of which can be avoided with responsible choices. If you’re travelling, make sure your vehicle is in good condition, avoid speeding and never drive while tired or distracted.

Passengers should also insist on safety by wearing seatbelts and speaking up against reckless driving.

At social gatherings, stay aware of your surroundings, celebrate responsibly and look out for friends. If you’re hosting, ensure crowd control, provide enough space and help guests get home safely.

Christmas is not just about celebrations — it’s about caring. Check on neighbours, especially the elderly, children or anyone spending the holidays alone. Small acts of kindness reflect the true spirit of the season.

As we count down to Christmas Day, let’s stay alert, responsible and kind. Let the joy of the season inspire safe choices, not careless ones.

Wishing you a Merry Christmas filled with peace, joy and good health. May your holidays be safe, warm and full of love, and may we all enter the New Year with renewed hope and strength.
