UDA Announces August 15 Date for Tana River Grassroots Polls

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has scheduled its grassroots elections in Tana River County for August 15 after delaying the exercise to give more party members time to register and take part in the voting process.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the party said the elections will take place across all polling centres in the county between 8am and 5pm.

UDA said the postponement was aimed at increasing participation by allowing additional members to complete registration before the polls, strengthening inclusivity and internal party democracy.

“The exercise follows the earlier rescheduling to allow more Party members time to register and participate in the electoral process, further strengthening inclusivity and grassroots democracy,” the party said.

The announcement followed a consultative meeting involving elected and nominated leaders, grassroots representatives and the party’s National Elections Board (NEB), where preparations and election procedures were finalised.

The meeting was led by NEB chairperson Anthony Mwaura and attended by board members, Director of Finance and Administration Joseph Mulili, and Director of Communication Nathaniel Mong’are.

During the elections, party members will choose 20 officials at each polling centre to represent various groups within UDA’s grassroots structure.

The positions include representatives for farmers, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), professionals, youth, general members, religious groups and special interest groups.

UDA said the polls are part of its broader strategy to strengthen grassroots leadership and improve representation of different sections of the party membership.

After the exercise, the party expects to have elected 7,320 grassroots officials across Tana River County.

The officials will serve as the foundation of UDA’s local leadership network and represent party members at the polling centre level.

The party said preparations are already underway, with the National Elections Board set to supervise the process.

UDA has been conducting similar grassroots elections in various counties as part of its internal restructuring and leadership renewal programme.

The Tana River elections are expected to complete the selection of thousands of local party representatives who will help coordinate activities and strengthen the party’s grassroots presence in the county.
