Uber has suspended Visa card payments on its Kenyan platform, citing rising global costs of payment processing.
A company spokesperson explained that Uber regularly reviews payment methods in each market to manage costs while minimizing disruption for users. “We routinely assess payment options on a market-by-market basis to keep costs reasonable while balancing any impact on the customer experience,” the spokesperson said, noting that the decision followed such a review.
The update only affects Visa cards. Customers can still pay using Mastercard, American Express, M-Pesa, or cash.
Visa remains the dominant card network in Kenya, supported by a large cardholder base and extensive ATM coverage. However, card usage faces strong competition from mobile money services, especially M-Pesa, which continues to be the preferred payment method for most Kenyans due to its accessibility and widespread adoption.
