Two Prime Suspects In Athlete Benjamin Kiplagat’s Murder Detained For 21 Days

The two main individuals implicated in the killing of Kenyan-born Ugandan athlete Edward Benjamin Kiplagat will be held in police custody for a period of 21 days to facilitate the conclusion of ongoing investigations. Magistrate Cherono Kese of the Eldoret court granted the police’s request to detain the suspects, David Ekhai Lokere, also known as Timo, and Peter Ushuru Khalumi, when they appeared in court on Tuesday.

The Investigating Officer, Inyasio Mwaniki, sought an extension of time, citing the pending post-mortem examination to determine the cause of Kiplagat’s death. Mwaniki informed the court that crucial information, such as the details of the vehicle in which the athlete’s body was discovered and that of the motorcycle allegedly used by the suspects, is yet to be obtained from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

Moreover, Mwaniki revealed that essential exhibits collected from the suspects, including blood-stained clothing and a dagger knife, are awaiting analysis at the government chemist. Additionally, the CCTV footage retrieved from the crime scene is scheduled to be submitted to the cybercrime unit for verification and production.

The tragic incident occurred on Sunday morning in Kimumu estate, Eldoret, as Kiplagat was en route to his residence. One suspect was apprehended in Langas, Eldoret, while the other was caught at the Uasin Gishu and Trans Nzoia counties’ border.

Magistrate Kese directed that the two suspects be held at the Eldoret Central Police station. The case is scheduled for mention on January 24, 2024.
