Thugs Disrupt Lawyers’ Protest at Nakuru War Memorial Hospital Conflict

Tensions escalated on Thursday morning outside the Nakuru County government offices as police deployed teargas against thugs who disrupted a peaceful demonstration organized by the Law Society of Kenya (LSK).

The police intervened to disperse the thugs who were hurling stones at LSK officials as they attempted to deliver their petition to the Nakuru County Secretary.

LSK has accused both the Nakuru County government and officers from the National Police Service of ignoring six court orders instructing them to allow War Memorial Hospital staff to resume their duties at the facility.

This alleged defiance of court orders has resulted in two Environment and Land Court Judges in Nakuru recusing themselves from the case, citing frustration.

Since mid-January, War Memorial Hospital staff have refrained from returning to work amid the ongoing dispute over the hospital’s land, which remains unresolved in court.

Aston Muchela, Chairperson of LSK Rift Valley branch, expressed strong disapproval of what he described as impunity overseen by the governor, stating, “When she was elected to office, we expected her to uphold the rule of law.”

LSK Vice President Faith Odhiambo also condemned the disruption, stating, “We gather here as members of a profession whose significant contribution to our country is facing an imminent threat. We have witnessed thugs being deployed to disrupt a peaceful protest as members walked peacefully to present their petition.”
