In the African Union Commission (AUC) Chairperson elections held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Kenya’s candidate, Raila Odinga, has been defeated by Djibouti’s Mahmoud Ali Youssouf.
Raila initially led in the first two rounds, but lost to Mahmoud in the subsequent rounds. In the first round, Raila received 22 votes, while Mahmoud earned 18, and Richard Randriamandrato from Madagascar got 10 votes. One vote was abstained. In the second round, Raila secured 20 votes, Mahmoud 18, and Randriamandrato again received 10 votes, with another abstention.
However, Raila fell behind in the third round, where he retained 20 votes but was surpassed by Mahmoud, who gained 23 votes, while Randriamandrato dropped to 5 votes and was eliminated. With one more abstention, it became a head-to-head race between Raila and Mahmoud.
Mahmoud continued to lead in the fourth round, winning 25 votes compared to Raila’s 21, with one spoiled vote and another abstention. In the fifth round, Mahmoud’s lead grew to 26 votes, while Raila stayed at 21 votes, with one abstention. Raila was then eliminated from the race.
In the final round, Mahmoud won the AUC Chair with 33 votes, securing the position previously held by Chad’s Moussa Faki for eight years.
