The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has set aside the entire month of October to honour its founder and former Prime Minister, the late Raila Odinga, as the party prepares to mark one year since his death.
ODM announced on Thursday that it would observe October as ‘Mwezi wa Baba’, featuring a series of events across the country celebrating Raila’s contribution to Kenya’s democratic journey and Pan-African ideals.
The party described Raila’s death as a deeply painful moment for its leadership, members and supporters, saying his political legacy continues to have a significant impact on the country.
The commemorations will begin on October 2 with a nationwide candle-lighting ceremony. Supporters will be encouraged to light candles either individually or in groups at 6pm.
A major memorial rally will follow in Kakamega Town on October 9, bringing together ODM supporters from Kakamega, Vihiga, Busia, Bungoma and Trans Nzoia counties.
Between October 10 and 15, memorial activities will be handed over to Raila’s family, culminating in the main memorial service at Kang’o Ka Jaramogi in Bondo.
The programme will then shift to northern Kenya, where ODM will hold a memorial rally in Garissa Town on October 17. The gathering is expected to bring together party members and supporters from Garissa, Wajir, Mandera, Isiolo and Marsabit counties.
The party has also planned memorial events in the coastal region on October 18 and 19 before joining Kenyans in marking Mashujaa Day on October 20.
Further activities are scheduled for Kajiado County on October 21, while Turkana County will host commemorative events from October 23 to 25.
The month-long programme will conclude with a major ‘Mwezi wa Baba’ memorial rally in Nairobi on October 31.
ODM has called on its supporters to use the month of remembrance to recommit themselves to what the party describes as Raila’s ideals and vision for the country.
Raila died on October 15, 2025, while undergoing medical treatment in India. His death ended a decades-long political career that included serving as Kenya’s Prime Minister from 2008 to 2013.
