The incident occurred during an attempted arrest of suspected marijuana traffickers. According to police, the situation turned chaotic when officers tried to apprehend individuals believed to be involved in the drug trade.
The suspects allegedly had strong local backing, and a hostile crowd confronted the officers, throwing stones and demanding their release.
In the ensuing commotion, the officers reportedly fired shots in the air to disperse the mob. Amid the confusion, one person was fatally shot in the mouth and died on the spot.
The death sparked public outrage, with residents taking to the streets, blocking roads and lighting bonfires. A group of angry youth later stormed Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital, briefly disrupting operations as they attempted to retrieve the body from the mortuary.
In response, authorities deployed additional officers to restore order. All ten officers involved in the operation were disarmed and detained as investigations began.

Nakuru County Police Commander Michael Mwaura confirmed that the officers are under investigation to determine who fired the fatal shot. Their weapons have been sent for ballistic analysis, and an identification parade is scheduled for Tuesday, June 10.

Mwaura also revealed that one officer sustained injuries during the confrontation and is receiving treatment in hospital. He noted that the operation had stemmed from a routine patrol that led to the arrest of a suspected drug peddler, who then offered to lead the officers to a known supplier—triggering the violent clash.
The incident remains under investigation.
