In response to mounting frustrations over prolonged delays in passport issuance, Government Spokesman Isaac Mwaura has urged Kenyans with urgent travel needs to opt for the 50-page passport variant.
The recommendation comes as the delivery of the standard 34-page document faces setbacks due to persistent technical challenges with the printing machinery at Nyayo House.
Mwaura elucidated that the ongoing issues with the existing printing equipment have significantly hampered the timely issuance of passports. Acknowledging the severity of the situation, the government has taken proactive measures by procuring two new printing machines aimed at mitigating the current printing backlog.
Expressing their grievances, numerous Kenyan citizens have voiced concerns regarding the extensive waiting periods they’ve endured despite completing all necessary application procedures. With some individuals reportedly waiting for over six months to receive their passports, the inefficiencies in the passport issuance process have garnered widespread attention and criticism.
As an interim solution to alleviate the strain on the system and facilitate expedited passport issuance, Mwaura emphasized the viability of opting for the 50-page passport option. Despite the higher cost associated with the 50-page variant, priced at 6,000 Shillings compared to the standard 4,500 Shillings for the 34-page passport, it offers an avenue for individuals facing urgent travel requirements to obtain their travel documents promptly.
While efforts are underway to address the root cause of the delays through the introduction of new printing machinery, the recommendation for citizens to opt for the 50-page passport serves as a pragmatic workaround to mitigate the inconvenience caused by the ongoing technical challenges.
