Omanga Dumps UDA, Joins United Opposition

Businesswoman and former nominated senator Millicent Omanga has officially severed ties with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and announced her decision to align with the United Opposition.

Omanga, once a staunch UDA supporter and a key ally of President William Ruto during the 2022 elections, has not yet revealed the political party she intends to vie on.

Instead, she publicly declared her support for prominent opposition leaders, among them Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, Jubilee Party heavyweight Fred Matiang’i, and Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

She also confirmed plans to contest the Nairobi County Woman Representative seat in the 2027 General Election, a race she narrowly lost in 2022.

Speaking to supporters, Omanga praised the Mt Kenya community for backing her strongly in the last election, saying their support motivated her to make another attempt.

“I am deeply grateful to the Mt Kenya community for the 600,000 votes you gave me in Nairobi in 2022. I fell short by a small margin, but in 2027 I will be back on the ballot,” she said.

Omanga expressed optimism that the growing unity within the opposition will work in her favour, citing increased political and ethnic cooperation across key regions.

“This time, all cousins will move together. It won’t be just 600,000 votes. Fred Matiang’i has rallied the Gusii community and is joining hands with Mt Kenya. From Eastern, Kalonzo Musyoka has also united his people,” she noted.

She also criticised the current political leadership, encouraging voters to accept financial handouts but remain independent in their political choices.

“If anyone offers you money, take it. That is your own money—your taxes. MPs are camping at State House collecting handouts, and I speak from experience,” Omanga remarked.

Her comments were made on February 7, 2026, in Gatundu South after she was introduced by Gachagua during a traditional dowry ceremony for Ann and Aloise Kinyanjui.

A day earlier, on February 6, Omanga had reiterated her intention to run for the Nairobi Woman Representative seat, saying the decision came after extensive consultations with her supporters.

“Many have been asking about my plans for 2027. I will be on the ballot for Nairobi Woman Representative. I am with my people, and we are moving together,” she said.

Omanga enters an increasingly competitive race to replace incumbent Esther Passaris, who has announced she will not seek re-election in 2027. Other expected contenders include Nominated Senators Karen Nyamu, Tabitha Mutinda, Crystal Asige, activist Hanifa Adan, and social media figure Maverick Aoko.
