Why Kindiki Send Kiraitu to Talk to Uhuru Kenyatta

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has tasked former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi with initiating dialogue with retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, citing Murungi’s extensive political experience as ideal for the role.

Speaking during an event in Meru on Saturday, July 26, Kindiki praised Murungi’s political credentials, saying few in the region could match his standing, and even remarked that he himself had yet to reach that level of experience.

He urged Murungi to approach Kenyatta directly, referring to him as a leader the region had firmly backed in the past, and asked him to raise the importance of Mt Kenya unity and a shared political roadmap ahead of the 2027 elections during their conversation.

Kindiki called on Murungi to speak with Kenyatta as fellow retired politicians and work toward preserving the unity the Mt Kenya community once had.

The Deputy President also recalled his own history with Kenyatta, noting that he had been part of the legal team that represented both Kenyatta and President William Ruto during their case at the International Criminal Court in The Hague, and said he had stood firmly behind Kenyatta both before and during his presidency.

The appeal comes shortly after Democratic Change Party leader Rigathi Gachagua expressed approval of Kindiki’s earlier remarks calling for unity within the Mt Kenya region. Speaking on Monday, July 20, Gachagua — who has been locked in an ongoing rivalry with Kindiki since leaving office — conceded for the first time that Kindiki had made a valid point.

Gachagua said he welcomed Kindiki’s assertion that the Mountain should remain undivided, adding that a fractured Mt Kenya region was the only path through which Ruto could secure re-election. He further urged residents of the region to ease their hostility toward Kindiki, reminding them that he remains one of their own.
